Electronic Waste

What is E-Waste & IT Waste?

Electronic scrap or E-waste refers to all discarded old electrical & electronic devices like used computers, mobile phones, televisions, refrigerators, and batteries that do not have any more uses left. Sell your electronic (E) scrap (computers, mobile, TV, fridge, machines) to e-waste buyers & get best price + fast, free pickup to contribute healthy planet & environment.

It reaches the end of its product cycle as it may become obsolete, damaged, or unwanted by the user. When a device runs on electricity or batteries and is discarded, replaced, or no longer functional, it is defined as E-waste. Some of the common examples of E-waste are mobile phones, tablets, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, lighting equipment (LEDs, CFLs), solar panels, and electronic accessories.

IT [(information Technology) electronic scrap] waste is a subcategory of E-waste. It specializes in devices used in information technology and communication purposes. Most of the IT equipment is typically obtained from offices and corporate setups, data centers, educational institutions, government organizations, and IT and software companies. Examples of IT waste are desktop computers, laptops, servers, data storage devices, hard drives, SSDs, USB drives, and networking equipment (routers, switches, modems). For IT waste, in addition to environmentally friendly processing, it is important to safely clear the data stored on these devices.

Types of Electronics We Accept

How It is Processed?

E-waste/ IT waste collection

• Scrapfit collects e-waste and IT waste from homes, organizations, drop-off locations, etc., and relocates them to our processing facility.
• Protective measures are taken to prevent loss or damage to any material.

Erasing the sensitive data

• Scrapfit then uses a certified software erasing tool or physical destruction to clean the sensitive data from storage devices like hard drives and servers.
• This process is performed for corporate clients who require complete anonymity of their data.
• It is also important to clear all the sensitive data from devices to comply with the regional and international data protection laws.

Scrap material sorting

• After the material arrives at the facility, it is then sorted according to material type, such as plastic, metal, glass, etc.
• Based on the component condition, Scrapfit decides on further processing of the e-waste- reuse, refurbish, recycle, or categorization as hazardous waste.

Physical dismantling

• The materials are dismantled physically and separated into their constituent components.
• Any hazardous material, like mercury-based components and batteries are removed.
• The remaining material is shredded into minute pieces to facilitate faster material recovery.
• Plastic, glass, and other non-metal materials are selected for recycling.

Processing and recovery

• Precious metals like gold, silver, copper, etc., are collected, smelted, and reused for making new products.
• Other materials like plastic, glass, paper, etc are recycled, and also used in new structures.

Hazardous and non-recyclable material

• Materials like batteries and mercury-based materials are destroyed in accordance with government regulations.
• These materials cannot be used as raw materials for new products, nor can they enter soil, air, or water.

Documentation

• After the E-waste/IT waste is successfully processed, it is important to maintain proper documentation for all waste and materials obtained from it.
• Maintaining proper documentation is not just essential for institutional logistical purposes but also for compliance with regional regulatory rules.

Benefits (to the other industries)

• Manufacturing industries: Suppliers can gain access to cheaper raw materials and metals obtained from processed E-waste items.
• Metallurgical and mining industries: E-waste/IT waste is a great source for obtaining important metals like gold, silver, palladium, etc.
• Electronics and electrical industries: Processing of E-waste/IT waste can produce several electrical components and recycled devices.
• Automotive industries (including EVs): There are several components obtained from the E-waste processing industry, which are useful in manufacturing components of vehicles.
• Renewable energy sector: Using the material obtained from the E-waste processing industry, components like solar panels, inverters, controllers, and storage systems are available in the renewable energy sector.
• IT and data security industry: E-waste processing requires secure handling of sensitive data, which facilitates the use of the IT industry.
• Plastic and polymer industry: E-waste generates a large amount of plastic that can be recycled to produce plastic and polymer products.
• Glass industry: The glass screens of computers, phones, and other electronic devices can be recycled in the glass industry to produce glass-related products.
• Chemical and refining industry: Chemical processes are used for metal refining, separation, and purification of E-waste components.
• Research and innovation sector: To cater to the increasing demand for E-waste and IT waste processing, research and development of new technologies, such as material recovery, automation, and recycling efficiency, are required.
• Environmental and waste management industry: As demands for E-waste management are increasing, there is a need for improvement in the environmental and sustainable practices industry.

India Regulations

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR):

• This regulation extends the responsibility of E-waste management to the producers and manufacturers of the devices.
• The manufacturers must register their products on the CPCB EPR portal and report annually.
• If the producers fail meet the collection targets, they can be penalized for environmental compliance.

Authorization and Registration

• Recycling and dismantling organizations must obtain relevant permissions from the State / Central Pollution Control Board.
• They must also possess a consent to operate in compliance with the pollution control rules.

Prohibited Practices

• Uninformed handling of E-waste/IT waste is prohibited, as it can lead to the generation of environmental waste.
• Informal scrap processing can lead to disciplinary or enforcement actions from relevant authorities.

Monitoring and Reporting

• Manufacturers must maintain records of e-waste collected annually and the portion of this waste recycled.
• CPCB regularly monitors such documentation, and failing to comply with it can lead to regulatory consequences.

Enforcement and Penalties

• If manufacturers or organizations fail to comply with the above-explained regulations, relevant authorities can impose imprisonment or penalties under the broad environmental laws.
• CPCB and State Pollution Control Boards can take actions like notices, stop-work orders, or environmental compensation for non-compliance.
